What is your budget?
Your budget will determine whether you go for a more expensive vacuum or not. Just because a vacuum is more expensive it doesn’t mean it’s better. You can easily find a good vacuum that can last one to two years with regular use, that’s within your budget.

How large is your space?
If you have a large space with multiple surfaces then you will want a vacuum that can handle that. Most cordless vacuums or stick vacuums can provide between 20-40 minutes of use. If you will be pausing in order to charge the vacuum battery, it will become annoying and frustrating.

What’s your floor surface?
If your home has carpet or tile throughout, you want a vacuum that will help make sure these surface areas stay clean. A vacuum that can vacuum, mop and dry hardwood and tile floors is ideal. It means you won’t have to take out your bucket and mop after vacuuming.

What’s the vacuum warranty?
Another thing to consider before making your purchase is the vacuum warranty. If you’re going to pay hundreds of dollars for the vacuum, you want it to last. Make sure to look at the warranty of the vacuum and read whether they offer full replacement or parts and whether you have to pay for it.Once you’ve answered the above questions, it will be easier for you to choose the best vacuum for your home. If you’re still struggling, the below questions and answers should help you make an informed decision.

Which vacuum is the best for low-pile carpet?
Lightweight canister vacuums are great for low and high pile carpet. They also usually have a setting that can transition from hardwood to carpet. Make sure that the vacuum also has a HEPA filter to help trap in dust particles.

Which vacuum can vacuum and mop?
Wet and Dry vacuums are great for vacuuming up messes, whether it is cereal on the floor or apple juice. If you have sealed floors, tiles or marble, wet and dry combo vacuum cleaners are ideal for these surfaces.

Are robot vacuum cleaners worth the money?
Robotic vacuum cleaners are great for cleaning your floors, whether they are carpet, tile, hardwood or even marble. Robot vacuums can help you save some time on cleaning but they can’t always pick up hard messes. Another thing to know is that all robot vacuums are not the same. Some can only work on hardwood or flat surfaces while others are suitable for carpets and have the ability to wash and dry stain spots.

What can handheld vacuums clean?
If you want to clean your car or a quick spill, a handheld vacuum is great for that. There are also upright vacuums that can be removed or used as handheld vacuums. These are better option since you can get more out of the vacuum and use it for larger surfaces as well.

What’s the best vacuum if you have allergies?
Vacuums with HEPA filters are ideal for those with seasonal or yearly allergies. Bagged vacuum cleaners are great because you can vacuum numerous times before needing to replace the bag. You also don’t come in contact with the dust like you do with bagless vacuums which you have to empty after each use.

  1. With two dogs and one cat, and almost no carpeting any more in our house, I need to find a vacuum that has the right balance. I don’t think the robotic ones would work for me at this time, because I have pet gates between rooms and currently clutter (my mother-in-law went into a nursing home and we have boxes and boxes of things from her house and are slowly going through them and distributing things to other family members – maybe when we get those gone).

  2. Great thoughts on which vacuum to choose when making a purchase. We have a rather large cleaning area so we ideally need 2. Great food for thought here.
